Hard Engineered Solutions
Hard engineered quay heading holds the bank with a continuous line of piles, tied back into the land behind. It is what most Broads properties have and what most replacements call for. The specification matters more than the method: pile thickness, timber grade and the tie-back detail are what decide whether it lasts fifteen years or forty.
Sheet Piling
Most quay heading on the Broads is timber, and most of that is pressure-treated redwood. We also install steel, concrete and plastic piling where the site or the specification calls for it. Sheet piling resists water pressure and holds the bank behind it.

Soft Engineered Solutions
Soft engineered solutions slow erosion without a hard edge, keeping the bank accessible to wildlife. They are often what the Broads Authority prefers, and sometimes what it will permit where a hard quay heading would be refused (see our guide to Broads riverbank permissions).
Green Revetments
Our green revetment systems incorporate vegetation, natural materials, and geotextiles to provide erosion control while enhancing the ecological value of waterfront areas.
Gabion Walls
Using wire mesh cages filled with rocks or other natural materials, gabion cage walls and retaining offer a visually appealing and environmentally conscious solution for quay protection.
Alder Pole Piling
A row of small tapered timber poles driven into the bank, typically 100 to 150mm across at the base. The gaps between the poles let water voles, slow worms and other wildlife reach the bank behind, so it slows erosion without creating a hard edge. Often the right answer where a hard quay heading would not be permitted.
